Sedum Spheres

There are lots of times I see beautiful garden art and say to myself "Why can't I be that creative?" It's really not that hard once you learn the secrets. The perfect example I'm talking about is this beautiful living garden ball. Today I'm at Rivers Greenhouse and Garden where Rhonda is going to share the construction steps. The first step is to create the growing sphere. It's easy using two wire hanging baskets with coco coir liners. Each half is filled with potting mix for cactus and blond sphagnum peat moss, and then the two halves are flipped together to form a sphere. Hold everything together with plastic zip ties. Your local garden center will have a collection of sedums and succulents to choose from. Planting comes next. Small plugs like these are easy to handle. Simply cut a slice in the coco coir liner and push the plug through. Now come the design step. Be sure to mix up the planting pattern and try to make it look random. You can even take cuttings and stick these directly through the coco coir into the potting mix where they will have no trouble rooting. Your newly planted sedum ball will look like this and with a little patience and time it will be ready to proudly display. And these are easy to care for, just be careful not to over water them.
