Fall Salvia

Gardeners who follow Southern Gardening know that I’m a real fan of salvia. Let’s take a look at some new introductions that I think are still looking good for the fall landscape. How can you beat salvia for its ability to be a show stopper and pollinator attractor? And in the fall season salvia really shines. At Truck Crops they’re growing three salvia selections you need in your garden. Pollinators simply adore these plants. Rockin Deep Purple displays richly colored dark purple flowers each with a black calyx and stems. I like the dark calyx because it maintains a color presence after the flowers have fallen off. Rockin Fuchsia produces showy unique fuchsia colored flowers with black calyx and stems. These gorgeous colored plants are trouble-free with no deadheading needed. Both Rockin’ Deep Purple and Fuchsia are sterile selections which will not set seed. That means these plants will be in continuous bloom all season. Rockin Golden Delicious salvia is a real treat. The bright yellow foliage has a pleasant pineapple scent. This is an ideal heat tolerant selection, and in the cooler temps of fall will produce bright fire engine red flowers. Regular watering and fertilizing will keep these plants Rockin’ with maximum color, growth and performance. I’m horticulturist Gary Bachman and I’ll see you next time on Southern Gardening.
