Tips for Shopping Farmers Markets
Video by Jonathan Parrish
Shopping at your local farmers market is a great way to add more nutritious foods to your diet, eat in-season produce, and support and connect with local farmers and the agriculture industry. At the farmers market:
- The produce is seasonal, meaning it’s picked at peak ripeness, so you can enjoy local fruits and vegetables when they are at their best.
- There’s always something new for everyone to enjoy and incorporate into new dishes. Give new produce a try by adding it to a salad, soup, or casserole.
- It’s an adventure the whole family can enjoy. Don’t be afraid to try the samples that are offered.
If you don’t have a local farmers market, be on the lookout for roadside stands or consider joining a community-supported agriculture (CSA) group.
Shopping at your local farmers market is a great way to support local farmers and the local economy. For a list of certified farmers markets in Mississippi, visit the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce website.
Bonus tips:
- Bring your own bag.
