MISSISSIPPI STATE -- Mississippi Delta native Dr. Bob Watson, co-owner of the Brookhaven Animal Hospital, recently received the young veterinarian of the year award from his professional statewide association.

The Mississippi Veterinary Medical Association presented Watson with the award at the annual winter meeting held at Mississippi State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. A native of Cleveland, Watson received a bachelor's degree in biology from Delta State University in 1989. He received his doctorate in veterinary medicine from MSU in 1994.

After graduation, Watson worked briefly in Arkadelphia, Ark., before joining Allen & Griffin Animal Clinic in Greenville. He and his wife, Dianne, who graduated from MSU in 1993, founded the Brookhaven Animal Hospital in 1998.

Watson, who graduated in the top 5 percent of his veterinary class, was recognized his senior year for outstanding skills in large animal medicine. In his practice, Watson treats exotic, small and large animals.

MVMA President Richard Hopper said Watson's dedication to his patients, their owners and his profession made him an obvious choice for this award. Hopper, associate professor with MSU's College of Veterinary Medicine, said Watson is living up to the expectations for all MSU graduates.

"Dr. Watson is a great example of enthusiasm for quality veterinary medicine, and he has a keen awareness of the importance of community involvement," Hopper said. "A good veterinarian takes care of animals; the best veterinarians take care of animals and their communities."
