4-H winners make business co-op tour
MISSISSIPPI STATE – Some of Mississippi’s top youth will be touring the state in the 2012 4-H Cooperative Business Leadership Conference.
First-place winners in the senior level of competition at this year’s 4-H Congress, state awareness team members and state 4-H Council officers will participate in the conference and bus tour July 17-20. They will begin and end at Mississippi State University, stopping along the way in Mayhew, Meridian, Jackson, Greenville, Scott and Greenwood.
“These youth are among Mississippi’s finest, having progressed in their 4-H contest categories from the local to the state level,” said Harvey Gordon, MSU Extension Service 4-H youth development specialist.
Youth will spend a day learning about the structure and goals of business cooperatives and experience one firsthand by establishing and operating their own soft drink cooperative. Their tour will include an electric power association, a farmers’ supply, grain terminal and a cotton gin. The youth also will spend time visiting the Mississippi Capitol.
“This conference gives them the opportunity to see working cooperatives firsthand and how state government works,” Gordon said.
4-H is the youth development program of the MSU Extension Service, open to those ages 8 to 18. 4-H youth development opportunities are available in all 82 counties.
