ATV Safety Tips

Riding ATVs is a blast! If you do it safely! If you want to have fun and lower the risk of having an accident, here are 10 safety tips to follow.

1. Take a Course. Before you do anything, familiarize yourself with your vehicle and learn how to use it. We also recommend taking a course like the ATV Safety Institute’s eCourse to learn the basics of operating ATVs. 
2. Age Matters. ATVs aren’t toys. If you’re under 16 years old, make sure you ride with an adult. Be sure to use good judgement when operating. 
3. Wear a Helmet. Seriously, always wear a helmet when you’re on an ATV! Not any helmet will work. Make sure you have one approved for ATV riding. Wear boots, gloves, and goggles as well. 
4. Stick to Unpaved Trails. Unpaved trails are for ATVs. Paved roads are for automobiles, bikes, skateboards, and skates, NOT ATVs. Stay off the roads and enjoy the dirt! 
5. Ride Without Passengers. Unless your ATV is made for two people, only ride by yourself. When driving, use your weight to balance and control the vehicle. If you have a passenger, you lose the ability to control the ATV. 
6. Be a Control Freak. Being behind the wheel of an ATV means you make adult decisions constantly. Keep a low speed and stay in charge. Avoid wheelies, stunts, and jumps, as they put you at serious risk of accidents. 
7. Ride with a Clear Head. Never get behind the wheel while drinking alcohol or using drugs. You want to be able to go from point A to point B safely!
8. Know the Terrain. If you’re riding a new trail, scout it out first. Check for obstacles such as logs, drop-offs, and other dangers.
9. Know the Rules. Every state has different laws about ATV riding, training, and age limits. Being informed keeps you legal and safe!
10. Ride the Right Size Vehicle. Your ATV should fit like a glove! If it’s too big or too small, it’s not safe. Make sure you can reach the controls, stand comfortably, and brake without stretching.
